SEC Filing Intelligencefor Retail Investors
“Read the filing. Then the story.”Direction — Research JournalSaturday, May 9, 2026

§ 01The premise

Filings are primary source material. Treat the product like an editorial desk: serif display for authority, monospace for data and tickers, warm paper tones that invite reading, and one marker-yellow accent that echoes the annotation feature — the playful part.

01.1 — Positioning
Read the filing. Then the story.

A research journal for people who
actually read the 10‑K.

Portolio is the desk between you and the SEC — a feed of your companies’ filings, Smart Summaries in plain English, and a reader where you can highlight, annotate, and (soon) publish your own breakdown.

01.2 — Tone

Calm, not corporate.
Curious, not cutesy.
Serious about the work, light about itself.

§ 02Wordmark

From portolano, the medieval Mediterranean merchant’s nautical chart — a name for charting markets the way Venetian and Genoese traders charted the sea. The mark is a Fraunces italic lowercase with a single marker-yellow punctuation dot — the “highlight” sitting on the end of the word like a pen nib. No icon beyond the letter p with the dot when a square mark is needed.

§ 03Palette

Paper-warm neutrals read like newsprint. Ink is near-black with a touch of warmth. One marker yellow for delight and annotation. Editorial green / rust for up/down. Cobalt only for links in running text. All chromas capped low — no SaaS dayglo.

§ 04Typography

Three families, narrow roles. Fraunces for display, headlines, body reading inside the filing reader, and any italic moment. Geist for UI and buttons. JetBrains Mono for tickers, numbers, timestamps, and metadata — anything that demands alignment.

One watchlist card. Ticker badge is a little italic serif capital — warmer than the usual flat monogram. Numbers go full mono with tabular figures. The filing feed below uses typographic kind-labels (10-K / 8-K / INS) instead of colored dots.

§ 06Applied · Filing reader

Three columns. TOC left, filing body center (set in Fraunces like a serious article), Smart Summary + annotations on the right. Highlights use the marker accent literally — a digital highlighter for the 10-K.
